The Skin Type Cheat Sheet

Ingredients that actually match the problem.

GLOSS BUREAU

Stop shopping by skin type. Start matching the ingredient to the signal.

Oily. Dry. Combination. Sensitive. These labels are everywhere, but they are rarely specific enough to build a useful routine.

Skin is not fixed. It shifts with weather, stress, hormones, cleansing habits, barrier damage, product overload, sun exposure, and how aggressively it is being treated.

The better question is not, “What is my skin type?” The better question is: what is my skin doing right now?

Signal vs Reality

Most routines break down because they solve the wrong problem.

The issue is not always the product. Sometimes the routine is reacting to the wrong signal.

Signal

“My skin is oily.”

Reality

Skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time. Shine does not always mean the skin needs to be dried out.

Signal

“My skin is sensitive.”

Reality

A damaged barrier can make skin react to everything. That is not always the same as true sensitivity.

Signal

“I need stronger products.”

Reality

Too many actives can create the exact texture, redness, and irritation they are supposed to fix.

Ingredient Intelligence

Match what you see to what the skin may need.

This is the visual shortcut: identify the visible condition first, then choose the ingredient lane that actually fits.

The Cheat Sheet

Six common skin signals, decoded by ingredient direction.

Choose the concern that feels most visible right now. Then build the routine around that one priority before adding more.

01

Barrier Support

Dry, tight, or irritated skin

What you’re seeing

Flaking, tightness, discomfort, rough patches, or products that suddenly sting.

What it usually means

The skin barrier is stressed. Water is escaping, and the skin is having trouble staying comfortable.

Ingredients that make sense

Ceramides, glycerin, panthenol, squalane.

Why they work

Ceramides support the lipid barrier. Glycerin helps pull water into the skin. Panthenol helps calm the feel of irritation. Squalane helps soften the surface.

Routine direction

Pause exfoliants and strong actives. Focus on cleanser, moisturizer, and barrier support first.

02

Oil + Hydration

Shiny, but still tight skin

What you’re seeing

Surface shine throughout the day, paired with tightness, dullness, or a lack of bounce.

What it usually means

The skin may have oil, but not enough water support.

Ingredients that make sense

Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, lightweight gel moisturizers.

Why they work

Niacinamide supports barrier function and the look of excess oil. Humectants help improve water content so the skin feels more balanced.

Routine direction

Hydrate without smothering the skin. Use lightweight moisture instead of skipping moisturizer completely.

03

Congestion

Clogged pores, bumps, and breakouts

What you’re seeing

Blackheads, small bumps, uneven texture, recurring breakouts, or pores that look more visible.

What it usually means

Oil, buildup, inflammation, and slow cell turnover may be working together.

Ingredients that make sense

Salicylic acid, retinoids, azelaic acid.

Why they work

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and helps address buildup inside pores. Retinoids support renewal. Azelaic acid helps with the look of blemishes, redness, and post-breakout marks.

Routine direction

Choose one main corrective lane. Stay consistent before adding more.

04

Redness

Reactive, flushed, or easily irritated skin

What you’re seeing

Redness, flushing, sensitivity, stinging, or skin that reacts quickly to new products.

What it usually means

Inflammation and barrier instability may be making the skin more reactive.

Ingredients that make sense

Azelaic acid, centella asiatica, panthenol, ceramides.

Why they work

These ingredients are often used to support calmer-looking skin and reinforce barrier comfort.

Routine direction

Stabilize first. Introduce active ingredients slowly and one at a time.

05

Tone

Dark spots, dullness, and uneven color

What you’re seeing

Post-breakout marks, dark spots, dull patches, uneven tone, or discoloration that lingers.

What it usually means

Pigment overproduction may be triggered by inflammation, sun exposure, or past breakouts.

Ingredients that make sense

Vitamin C, azelaic acid, retinoids, niacinamide, sunscreen.

Why they work

Vitamin C supports brightness. Azelaic acid and niacinamide help improve the look of uneven tone. Retinoids support renewal. Sunscreen helps prevent discoloration from deepening.

Routine direction

Keep the routine consistent and protective. Brightening ingredients work better when SPF is non-negotiable.

06

Texture

Dull, rough, or uneven skin

What you’re seeing

Roughness, dullness, visible unevenness, makeup catching on the surface, or skin that lacks smoothness.

What it usually means

Dead skin buildup and slower renewal may be affecting the surface.

Ingredients that make sense

Lactic acid, gentle AHAs, retinoids.

Why they work

AHAs help refine the surface. Lactic acid is especially useful when the skin needs exfoliation with a more cushiony feel. Retinoids support long-term renewal.

Routine direction

Refine gradually. More exfoliation is not always better.

How To Use This Correctly

Do not try to fix everything at once.

Pick the loudest signal, match the ingredient lane, use one corrective step, and build in recovery.

Routine Placement

Morning, night, and recovery, simplified.

Once the ingredient lane is clear, the next step is placement. The routine should feel repeatable, not crowded.

Bureau Picks by concern.

Product examples should support the routine logic. Each link belongs to a condition, not a random shopping list.

The Bureau Standard

Your skin does not need more products. It needs the right ones.

When the ingredient matches the condition, the routine becomes easier to understand. Results stop feeling random. The skin has fewer mixed signals. The product shelf starts to make sense.

Skin type tells you the category. Skin condition tells you what to do next.
